Lutherans — Called to Serve

Foster Care and Family Intervention Services Seeking Volunteers

When a child is placed in foster care, he or she often has nothing but a trash bag for transporting belongings. For those of us who know we are loved and appreciated, the use of a trash bag may go unnoticed. However, for many foster children, that is not the case. Through an individual suitcase donation or the organization of a group suitcase drive, we can show foster children that they are cared for.  A suitcase drive is just one of the many simple ways that you can support the work of the Specialized Foster Care program and Family Intervention Services (FIS) at LSG.

LSG's foster care program is currently experiencing an exciting time of growth and training advancements. With the increase of cases, the department is seeking volunteers with a variety of skills such as marketing, grant research and writing, and data entry/analysis. Volunteers are also sought for the Family Intervention Services program. Individuals can greatly contribute to FIS by serving as assistant supervisors of family visitations (training will be provided).

If you are interested in individual or group volunteer and donation opportunities, please contact senior program manager Taylor Brand at tbrand@lsga.org or 404-591-7035.  Please share your skills and talents with us!

Refugee Families Need Your Help

Refugee arrivals are increasing and we need your help to serve them. Congregations are needed to co-sponsor refugee families and assist them in adjusting to their new life in the United States. Duties of sponsorship can be tailored to the availability and resources of the congregational volunteers and the needs of the refugee family.

Immediate Needs: Co-sponsors for large families; washer/dryers; summer tutors to work with individual children.  If you would like to help, please contact Melanie Johnson, Volunteer Coordinator for Refugee Services, at 678-686-9619 or mjohnson@lsga.org.  Thanks!

SE Synod revamps disaster response plan

Excerpt: Last year the Southeastern Synod revamped its disaster response plan. This included the recruitment and training of regionally located volunteers who will assist congregations to prepare for disasters and encourage networking within their communities with other disaster preparedness efforts. These coordinators will work with the synod to enhance communication and coordination in the event of a disaster and to help congregations in their response.
